The Coming Age of Reason

These mysterious guide stones have intrigued my friend Nancy and me for several years. A couple of weeks ago we decided to go see them for ourselves and, there we were almost eight miles away from a small rural town in Elberton, Georgia.

The four huge 19 ft stones prescribe principles for living – some of them controversial — in eight different languages. The languages chosen were Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, English, Kiswahili, Russian, and Spanish. The stones also have an inscription, an appeal to reason, in four archaic languages – Babylonian Cuneiform, Classical Greek, Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Sanskrit, and there are some fascinating astronomical aspects regarding their positioning and location as well.

We did not spend much time discussing the riddle, ‘the why and who did it’ of the guide stones. We were much more interested in the ten inscribed guidelines – their intended potential as evolving principles to direct the course and future of humanity.

They are worth reading and pondering…look them up and start a conversation.

Prize truth – beauty – love – seeking harmony with the infinite…
…leave room for nature

Be Where You’re Headed

Peru"Immediately after you stand on the peak of a mountain you step forward and begin to climb a higher mountain which is down below" Kobun Chino

I am reading an insightful book entitled "The Answer To How Is Yes" by Peter Block. The title itself speaks volumes. The author says we should identify and commit to acting on what matters before we immediately start on the trail with the 'how' questions.

When I looked at the initially daunting peak of Machu Picchu, I was on the top of it before I figured out how to get there. I saw it one day and climbed it the next – sure, I had to find a guide, agree on a time, fit my water supplies, first aid kit, snacks and camera into a small backpack, etc. etc. However, I had already said "Yes" — Had I started with how long will it take, do I have the energy, how many others make it to the top, how do I do this alone without my sisters or friends, I would not have made a move! "How" can immobilize you if asked too soon – the answer to how is most often yes!

What mattered was that I really wanted to experience the "heart chakra of the earth."

'Be there' from right where you are!

Step forward!

Time To Play

Yes, play! When is the last time you played? Have you ever heard that in a 24-hour period it is recommended to spend 8 hours for work (that's easy!) 8 hours for sleep (hmmm…challenging for many of us) and 8 hours for play (oh really?!)

Time To Play

Play…for eight hours…most of us fall very short. I counted time spent with family, friends and myself, threw in cooking as well and still did not make it.

It makes you stop and think though. Why do we struggle with play so much? Why do we fail to carve out enough 'me time' and 'us time'? Given the demands of today's society, it may not be realistic to expect 8 hours of play; however, it is certainly worth a try!

I sometimes arrange my doll collection, play with Jacks (I'm good) and Pick Up Sticks (remember those?) and believe it or not, find sanity there. I enjoy 'watching' our family playing Monopoly — I'm the party pooper, it takes too long to play. I absolutely treasure the dwindling sit down dinner times too.  Even then, these are too sporadic to count toward regular playtime.

We sigh and call them the good ole' days…I say we take some of the good stuff back!

On your marks, get set…go claim some playtime,

Walking Our Path

Walking Our Path

I sometimes wonder at my own internal questions… amazed that after all these years (!) I periodically ask such basic, fundamental questions about my direction. Do we ever stop questioning the truth and 'rightness' of our paths? At what point do we say, okay, this is it…my path…I'm good right here!

How many of you out there, like me, still ponder? Just sit with these questions for a minute…and, while you're at it, throw in "who am I" and "what am I here for".

One of many reasons I embrace the great outdoors is simply because it feels good: clears my head, opens my heart and fills my body with energy and enthusiasm. I believe each season influences our lives in unique and very specific ways.

Sure, some people disconnect from nature or even shun the thought of experiencing 'what's out there'. Your path is your path, indoors, outdoors, internally, externally…we certainly have many choices.

Wherever your paths lead…do remember to take your questions with you.

Marching toward spring…Yes?

Being Careful

Being CarefulAt one point or another in all our lives, the very thing someone told us not to do, we have done. And what they tell us we don't have the ability to do, we just must. There is something about warnings, rules and parameters that thankfully do not always work.

We read alarming statistics about the volume of negative and damaging messages to which children are exposed. Parents and teachers are often the most guilty…the results of manipulating or shaking a child's ego or confidence can be devastating. No, can't, be careful this or that might happen – mind the gap, you might fall in it. If trying does not pose any negative side effects, you can often trust someone close to you to come up with some anyway.

What do you do? You push ahead – without their permission! Sidetracking a little, it reminds me of my nephew, Jamal's innocent (?) childhood retort to an adult friend of mine who was trying to correct him. He responded to her "You're not the boss of me!" Hmmmm….a useful 'adult position' to keep in mind.

What if you fall? Well, brush yourself off and get up, cry if you need to, change or adjust your course: just keep moving.

Being too careful will never get you out the door and on the path (and certainly not up a mountain!) Now, I am not suggesting we should throw caution to the wind…then again…

Gap, what gap?

What do I do?

As more and more news unfolds now and in events yet to come, we realize the vital need to enter an inner place where we retreat and be still. Immersed by what is happening all around us; what we hear and see is sometimes very painful. Many stare at images of despair not knowing what to do about any of it.

Quiet

In a book I am reading, the author speaks of 'responding' rather than 'reacting'. Within the above context, what does that distinction mean to you and how might it help?

Looking inward is not an act of disregard for the plight of others; rather, it is an act of connection. Seek wisdom, courage, calm and strength that can only come from within. And so, from there, we send love, compassion, service and other resources to the hurt.

Begin internally: quiet your thoughts and seek stillness first…then know…then act.

As within, so without,

New Year Promises

This is the day…THIS is the day I will stop smoking, I will not overeat, I will not procrastinate, I will be kinder and go to church regularly…there are endless promises being made all over our planet on this very day.

We are making them to God, ourselves, others… we are spewing them out because many of us celebrate today as the time to begin again.

What makes it so hard to stick with what we intend to happen? Why do we fail, more often than not, to give persistent attention to whatever details we say matter in our lives?

Let's start with the difference between attention and intention. I really like the following explanation offered by Michael Brown (The Presence Process), "Our attention is the tool of our mental body and is the "what" of our focus. Our intention is the tool of our emotional body and is the "why" of our focus".

If we do not have a very, very strong emotion around the 'what' – it will not be done. I believe it is best we absolutely identify with 'why' we choose to be or to do before we can gain any true traction or momentum to get the task accomplished.

So, before we get overly entangled in 'how' we're going to get the 'what' done; we must feel 'why' it even matters to us…or put yet another way: determine whether it matters enough to make the necessary sacrifices, and do the required work to reach our goal. I know I am repeating myself…it is a point worth dissecting!

Whether aiming for the moon or shooting for the stars — when you figure the above out, you are well on your way to a fulfilling and successful 2010!

reach beyond the wish,

Gratitude

Gratitude

I recently read a beautiful sign:

"Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already have." (Author unknown)

Wow…read that again! It is one of life's large lessons beautifully expressed in a few short thought-provoking words.
Of course, we will still want for more; however, stopping and really counting all the good already in our lives has its own rewards.

I keep a gratitude journal and write things, people, and experiences I am grateful for at the end of every day. (Okay, so I skip a few days!) It is a great exercise. Going to bed feeling thankful even helps you sleep better!

When emotions are high and things are challenging, as they can be during the holiday season, just remember that quote…consider writing it down on an index card so you can see it as a regular reminder.

Thank you for the rising sun,
mozella
